Jacob and John's Ohio Adventure

Little Brother Jacob grew up in Humboldt Park and has never really left Chicago, but Jacob and his Big Brother John would often talk about all the places in the world they wanted to travel to including Japan, Thailand, and New York. Jacob asked John if he could take him to one of those places, but John let him know that unfortunately it was too expensive and Big Brothers Big Sisters doesn't allow overnight outings.

Over their three years together, John's hometown of Cleveland would come up in their conversations, and the two bonded over their favorite Cleveland memes. This sparked an idea and John applied for the Akesh Experience so the two could check off some bucket list items and help Jacob learn the ins and outs of travel.

The two planned out the whole trip so they could fly to Cleveland and get back in one day. Jacob learned how to book a flight, create an itinerary and budget, and navigate an airport and airplane. They visited the house where A Christmas Story was filmed, had lunch with John's family, went to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and visited a boat museum. They flew back and were back in Chicago by the evening with Jacob having confidently navigated his first travel experience, but certainly not his last!

"As his Big, more than anything else, I wanted Jacob to be able to experience achieving a goal he'd set for himself," said John. I want him to know he is capable of doing something he's always dreamed of. And not only was Jacob capable, but he stepped up to make the trip a success. I believe this experience helped show Jacob that what he wants in life is possible and worth the effort. I know this will motivate him and have a big impact on his life, whether he sees it now or looks back on this years later."
